Clog Introduction

A clog is an impediment or obstruction in a drain or sewer line component of the drain-waste-vent system (DWV) that restricts or completely blocks the flow of wastewater and sewage.  The system of pipes that carries waste (greywater and sewage) to a sewer line or septic tank is call the drain-waste-vent (DWV) system. As the name implies, it has three components:

  • Drain lines collect waste water from sinks, showers, and tubs
  • Waste lines carry waste from toilets; and
  • Vents exhaust sewer gases and allow waste to flow freely.

All drain and waste lines slope slightly downward from the fixture toward the sewer or septic system.  The downward slope leverages gravity to enable the free flow of waste.

Clogs in drains or sewer lines are the cause of plumbing related stoppages, overflows, and back-ups; all of which create a nonhygienic home environment and constitute a health hazard.

Clog Indictors

The most common signs of a clogged drain or sewer line include:

  • Improper draining of multiple fixtures – especially toilets
  • Waste backing up out of a drain or toilet
  • Water pooling around a floor drain
  • Slow draining tubs, sinks and showers
  • Raw sewage odors or a gurgling sound
  • Changing water levels in a toilet bowl or the presence of bubbles
  • The backup of soapy water in the tub or toilet drain when running a washing machine, recurring plumbing backups, slow drains, and foul odors, and
  • Other less common indicators.

Common Causes of Clogs

Most drain or sewer line clogs are caused by:

  • Broken, cracked or collapsed drain or sewer line pipes
  • Corrosion of iron/galvanized pipes
  • Infiltration of tree roots
  • Buildup of cooking grease, hair, skin flakes, soap scum, and other substances, and
  • The inappropriate disposal and flushing of dental floss, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, paper baby diapers, baby wipes, cotton tipped swabs and other non-biodegradable objects down a toilet.

Clogs are cleared using several different techniques and specialty plumbing tools depending on the clogged fixture type (toilet, sink, shower, etc.) and the anticipated clog location (i.e., how far down the plumbing drain or sewer line the clog is).

For clogs in drain and sewer lines that far away from a clogged fixture, we use an electric auger equipped with a flexible steel cable and rotating blades.  The rotating blades cut through and remove the obstruction or impediment, including tree roots, that blocked or restricted the free flow of waste.
