Clogs

A clog is an impediment or obstruction in a drain or sewer line component of the drain-waste-vent system t(DWV) that restricts or completely blocks the flow of wastewater and sewage.  The system of pipes that carries waste (greywater and sewage) to a sewer line or septic tank is call the drain-waste-vent (DWV) system. As the name implies, it has three components:

  • Drain lines collect water from sinks, showers, and tubs
  • Waste lines carry waste from toilets; and
  • Vent lines exhaust sewer gases and allow wastes to flow freely.

All drain and waste lines slope slightly downward from the fixture toward the sewer or septic system.  The downward slope leverages gravity to enable the free flow of waste.

Clogs in drains or sewer lines are the cause of plumbing related stoppages, overflows, and back-ups; all of which create an nonhygienic home environment and constitute a health hazard.

Drain and Sewer Line Clog Clearing Methods

Clogs are cleared using severable different techniques and specialty plumbing tools depending on the clogged fixture type (toilet, sink, shower, etc.) and the anticipated clog location (i.e., how far down the plumbing the clog is located.)

For clogs in drain and sewer lines that far away from a clogged fixture, we use an electric auger equipped with a flexible steel cable and rotating blades.  The rotating blades cut through and remove the obstruction or impediment, including tree roots, that blocked or restricted the free flow of waste.
