A water heater heats water above its ambient temperature and is one of the most ignored and underappreciated plumbing appliances in any home/building because it is usually trouble free, requires minimal ongoing maintenance and has a decade or more of useful life.

Because it is essentially a silent partner in the production of hot water, most people do not expect that it will malfunction, nor do they fully realize the substantial damage that a leaking or failing water heater can inflict on their property.

Water Heater Types

The three primary types of water heaters that GPS specializes in and are the most prevalent in the DFW area include:

  • Conventional/tanked – a whole home/building water heater that produces and stores heated water in a tank for future use.  Gas and electricity are the commonplace water heating energy types
  • On demand/tankless – a whole home/building water heater that produces and supplies hot water only when demanded (e.g., when a hot water faucet or tap is opened).  Gas and electricity are also the commonplace water heating energy types
  • Point of Use (PoU) – a special use, small capacity water heater that produces and stores heated water in a tank for future use or heats water only when there is a demand.  PoU water heaters are installed in close proximity to the demand source such as a sink, shower, or bathtub.  Gas and electricity are also the ordinary water heating energy types

  1. Water temperature – household water is lukewarm, cold or there in an inadequate supply
  2. Rust color hot water – household hot water is rust colored, an indication of a faulty conventional water heater tank
  3. Pooling water or moisture – the area round the water heater base is moist or has pooling water
  4. Age – the age of the water exceeds the expected usefull life – 10-12 for gas fueled and 10-15 years for electric.
